Why Home Euthanasia
After being a veterinarian for over 30 years, I know one of the most beautiful parts of having a pet is the human-animal bond that develops. For many people, a pet becomes part of their family, much like a human child. For anyone who has let their pet sleep in their bed, stayed up late with their pet after a surgery or when that pet is feeling sick, then your relationship is on the level of family.
It is understood, although not often acknowledged, that the heartbreaking part of having a pet, is that their lives are so much shorter than ours. When a pet is brought home, they weave themselves into the fabric of your life and will often pass away before their human family counterparts. End of life care is a shared experience for all pet owners. Although all pets will transition away from this world in different ways, many pet owners will have to witness a decline in quality of life. Sometimes they will have to make a difficult decision about choosing euthanasia for their pet.
After 30 years I have seen this experience go many different ways for both the pet and the family. At the clinic I have seen animals and families nervous, fearful, and sometimes at peace. I have also travelled to people's homes and noticed a completely different calmness and peace. Pets that are euthanized at home are in their own environment with familiar smells, comforts and family that are comforting to the pet. There is no trip to the veterinary office with strangers, and not always a place of comfort to animals who don't understand what is happening. I have decided to offer this service to help this transition for pets and owners.
